Bringing the fragrance of a thousand years to the present day - What is "Ranjatai"?
"Ranjatai" is a special fragrant wood stored in the Shosoin Repository of Todaiji Temple in Nara.
It is said that only a limited number of historical figures, such as Oda Nobunaga, Ashikaga Yoshimasa, and Emperor Meiji, used this fragrant wood.
There is a saying that "he who possesses Ranjatai will rule the world," and it is also known as the most famous fragrance in the world (this name is not simply a complimentary term, but is an actual fact recorded in literature).
This fragrant wood is approximately 156cm long and weighs 11.6kg, and is still strictly managed as an Imperial property. It is rarely on public display, and is truly a "cultural asset of fragrance."
A modern reinterpretation by Cavto
The fragrance brand Cavto has reimagined the scent of this special wood as a perfume suited to modern life.
We took inspiration from expressions found in incense-related literature, such as "light and pure fragrance" and "old-fashioned and tranquil."
The resulting Ranjatai Eau de Parfum, the Scent of the Warring States Period, is a unisex perfume that brings out the depth and elegance of incense wood while also being easy to use on an everyday basis.
The first production is limited to 250 units. We are considering producing more units after they are sold out.
History and legend of Ranjatai
The three characters "Ran, Sha, Tai" each contain the characters for "To, Dai, and Tera" (East, Great, and Temple), giving the name a sense of prestige.
Ashikaga Yoshimasa is said to be the first person during the Muromachi period to cut off a piece of Ranjatai and enjoy its fragrance.
In 1574, Oda Nobunaga obtained permission from the Imperial Court to produce Ranjatai and burn it at a tea ceremony, which was also attended by Sen no Rikyu.
The fragrance of Ranjatai was so special that there are records that the scent remained even after 600 years.
Fragrance design: carefully expressing the complexity of fragrant wood
The fragrance of this product was designed by Cavto's CEO and creative director, Ririka Kimura, based on historical documents and literature on fragrant wood.
Developed in collaboration with a long-established Japanese fragrance studio.
In the world of incense, Ranjatai is said to have a complex aroma that contains all the flavors of sweet, spicy, sour, bitter and salty.
To replicate this characteristic, perfume formulations containing natural fragrances are used.
